The region & route

The region

In summer Carinthia is the region of lakes. The lakes glow turquoise blue and the water is warm. Children play on the shores, couples take romantic strolls and active types let off steam swimming, waterskiing or surfing.

And if you want to see the lakes from a different perspective, all you have to do is climb a mountain and look down into the valley over the wonderful Carinthian landscape. A landscape with 1,270 areas of still water, 200 swimming lakes, 8,000 kilometres of rivers and numerous mineral springs. All of these turn Austria’s most southerly province into a true water paradise. But do visitors to Carinthia really know all that the lakes have to offer? No, because with all the new holiday ideas even Carinthian professionals can take a fresh look at the lakes this summer.

UNESCO Biosphere Park Nockberge

The UNESCO Biosphere Park Nockberge is located in the south of Austria, in the Province of Carinthia. It extends as far as the Lieser valley and along an imaginary line from Eisentratten to Radenthein in the west, from Bad Kleinkirchheim to Patergassen in the south, from Patergassen via Ebene Reichenau to the Turracherhöhe, and then along the provincial border to Innerkrems in the north.  The National Park boundaries predominantly follow the lower tree line (buffer zone); the settled area lies beyond it (National Park Region). The UNESCO Biosphere Park Nockberge extends over four municipalities: Bad Kleinkirchheim, Krems in Kärnten, Radenthein and Reichenau.

In the Nockberge can be found a rich fauna, as the result of the extinction processes and re-introductions over the last hundreds and thousands of years.  It is the product of adaptations both to nature and to humans.  The protected area is home to numerous mammals, birds, amphibians, fish and insects.  Each individual habitat is occupied.  Please do bear in mind that even the smallest creatures is to be treated with respect.  Feeding the animals is generally prohibited!

Bad Kleinkirchheim

The village lies at 1100 above see level, in a 5 km long valley encircled by 2000 m high mountains all around.

The beautiful natural environment is coupled an excellent climate. During the past years, the settlement has also become one of the country’ s most remarkable sports centres, where winter sports are complemented by opportunities for summer sports too. Besides swimming and horse riding, tennis is also available on both open-air and indoor tennis courts.

Golf lovers’ demands are satisfied with an 18-hole golf course. Besides all these, our visitors like hiking the most. Dedicated hiking paths with a total length of about 100 kms run through woods, fields and sunny hillsides. Comfortable hammocks called wellness oases are posted next to the routes passing mountain streams, cool waterfalls and lakelets.
